Allergy Shots (immunotherapy)

Picture
Before receiving allergy shots, a skin test may be done to determine that your reactions are caused by an allergy, and what specific allergies are. See Scratch tests for more details.

What is an Allergy Shot?
Allergy shots are a form of immunotherapy. Every allergy shot contains a small amount of the substance that's  triggering your allergic reaction. These substances are called allergens. Each allergy shot contains just enough allergen to get your immune system to react. As time progresses, the dose of allergen is increased, thereby helping your body build a tolerance to the allergen.

Allergy Shots Can Be Helpful To Control:
  • Seasonal Allegies
  • Indoor Allergies
  • Insect Sting Reactions
  • Asthma

Will Allergy Shots Stop Your Allergies?
Allergies won't stop overnight. Generally they do improve over the course of a year. After a 3-5 years of treatment, many people show no signs of allergic reaction to the allergens.
